Virulent strains of Diplococcus pneumoniae possess a capsule that makes them resistant to a host animal's immune system, causing fatal pneumonia in the host. The virulent strain forms smooth (S) colonies in culture, and can be distinguished from avirulent bacteria which form rough (R) colonies.
