1. A poly-A "tail" is added to the cleaved 3' end.

  2. The non-coding introns are removed.

  3. The coding segments, called exons (expressed sequences), are joined in a process called splicing.

  4. The mature mRNA, composed of spliced exons, is now ready to exit the nucleus.
