Cichlids in the Rift Valley lakes of East Africa occupy a diverse array of niches. Some eat floating algae, whereas others are bottom feeders, insect feeders, mollusk eaters, and predators on other fish species. Species in each lake are more closely related to each other than to species from other lakes.
