Ultraviolet (UV)
light can induce mutations in the genetic material of bacteria, and is most mutagenic at 260 nm.
Absorption spectra measurements show that both DNA and RNA
absorb UV light most strongly at 260 nm, while protein absorbs most strongly at 280 nm.
This indicates a nucleic acid is the genetic material.
